Grillo's

The single room shack on Grundy Ave. that housed the local candy shop has seen better days. No idea how long it has been boarded up, but it appears to be years. The odds of Old Man Grillo still being alive are slim, indeed. From my former home at 976 Cheril, the journey to Grillo's, by bike, seemed epic. Today, about 3 minutes by car.

What was your favorite candy? Did you get it all before you got back on your bike to ride back home?

In those days, there was no doubt what my favorite candy was: The Reggie Bar, named after Yankee slugger Reggie Jackson. I was into Fun Dip as well, the powdery sugar in the pouch with the white, chalky stick used to gobble it up. Big League Chew bubble gum, too. I'd usually only eat one thing at Grillo's, on the curb. The rest made it back, only to be devoured before nightfall.

You carried the candy in one of those plastic newspaper bags on the grip of your bmx. Goodwill Lane in the Hizzouse!
